Whoever said the 80s were dead have obviously not been to an English Corner in Asia…

This week I went to my first English Corner, hurray! An EC is a great way for us to get to know Asian students, most of whom can speak pretty good English 🙂 It is also a great opportunity for them to practice their English with a native speaker. This week, we met on the steps of a fountain outside of a coffee house in the early evening. I quite honestly did not know what to expect. We did not have the chance to advertise our Corner too much so I was not sure if anyone would even come. But we ended up having a great turnout as over 20 students showed up! Thank you Lord!

It was an awesome experience for me as I was able to make new connections with many students and we hope to strengthen those relationships in the future :). We each spent over an hour talking to students and learning more about them and where they come from. However, the best part of the evening was the singing portion. I think that many Asian assume because we are Western that we can sing and sing well so at these gatherings they always ask us to sing a song. We chose “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas and who knew a song that is almost as old as I am could be so popular? It is amazing what you can do with a guitar and some lyric sheets 🙂
